Ooohhh the feels! What an emotional read。 I can barely see as I type this through tears! This story is amazing。 It's fear, strength, courage, love, and selflessness that make you want to be the person you read about。 To right the injustice of the world and be a better human! My thoughts:In this book, there are two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, that come from a very broken home。 Their widowed father deserts them and they have to fend for themselves from a very young age。 When the older sister, Vianne finds happiness in a marriage, the younger Isabelle feels deserted again。 These two young women have a strained relationship, and then they are both hit square between the eyes by WW II and the Nazi regime occupying France。 The sisters are both very strong and show their My thoughts:In this book, there are two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, that come from a very broken home。 Their widowed father deserts them and they have to fend for themselves from a very young age。 When the older sister, Vianne finds happiness in a marriage, the younger Isabelle feels deserted again。 These two young women have a strained relationship, and then they are both hit square between the eyes by WW II and the Nazi regime occupying France。 The sisters are both very strong and show their strength in different ways。 Isabelle, the younger sister, dives head first into the resistance and her experiences may be based on a real person named Andree de Jongh who actually took a very deliberate and active role to work against the Nazis。 Vianne, the older sister, takes on a more passive role to resist the Nazis。 At first she simply tries to survive and endure the occupation。 However, she also does her share of resisting by participating in activities that could get her killed。 Both young women struggle with their past and their present, and both young women need each other despite their differences and their bitter feelings。What I liked:I liked seeing, witnessing, and gaining some understanding of the horrible effects of WWII on working women in France。 I liked watching a conflicted Vianne as she struggles with watching a Nazi officer switch between being kind to her and ruthless to others。 I liked how both of these women stepped up and resisted the NazisWhat I did not like:This book romanticized “things” a bit。 I do not want to spoil the book, but not everyone will like the sappiness。 I was totally involved in the story, so I did not mind…but others might。 。。。more

2。5。 There were times I thought this would end up a DNF。 I’ve read many nonfiction memoirs and books about WWII/The Holocaust, so this fiction plot about a 19 year old girl jumping into the French resistance was reaching。 It was cliché, and the descriptions and the scattered use of French was repetitive。 I found the love story between Isabelle and Gaetan to be cheesy。 It was okay - the ending saved it。 Not KH’s best。

Kristin

Slow to start but then really caught my attention。 Couple of sad parts but it really made ve think about WWII from a different angle。 Great historical fiction for sure, she says in the Authors Note she did research on women who were part of the “resistance”

Amazing !Such a great story, I couldn’t stop reading。 It took me 2 1/2 days to read。 A beautiful and heart wrenching story。

4。5 starsI’ve had this one on my shelf for years because, while I knew it would be incredible, I also knew it would emotionally destroy me。 I was right on both counts! This book has a little of all, history, love, mystery, intrigue。 The book had me wondering and waiting to read what will happen and become of the characters。 I could not figure out which sister the old woman was going to be。 I was on edge whether Isabella would be caught, survive。 Highly recommend for anyone who likes this type of book。

Amazingly written, story is compelling but gave it 4 stars because it is extremely sad and tough content。

Words fail me right now as I sit here trying to process the magnitude of this book。 With each chapter it was like a stark window into the horrors of WW2 and yet you couldn't look away。 I was pulled directly into the story of Vianne and Isabelle and have tremendous respect for the women of the war who did so much, so silently in the face of such impossible odds。 This book will stay with me for a long time。 Words fail me right now as I sit here trying to process the magnitude of this book。 With each chapter it was like a stark window into the horrors of WW2 and yet you couldn't look away。 I was pulled directly into the story of Vianne and Isabelle and have tremendous respect for the women of the war who did so much, so silently in the face of such impossible odds。 This book will stay with me for a long time。 。。。more

So beautifully written。 History tells us what happened, but the stories with in the history make us feel what happened。

I loved this book! It takes place in Nazi occupied France and follows 2 sisters and they become heroic in their own ways。 This book beautifully exemplifies love between sisters, between parent and child, and between lovers in the midst of war。

Oh my goodness this book。 Another incredible story of the mother/daughter, mother/child bond。 This book kept me spell bound and heartbroken。 As an American we understand a very sanitized version of World War II and really understand it mostly from a solider's perspective。 Reading Hannah's book and gaining a better insight of the plight of the women and children left behind and their perseverance was gut wrenching and awe inspiring。 I cried through many of the last chapters but beamed with pride Oh my goodness this book。 Another incredible story of the mother/daughter, mother/child bond。 This book kept me spell bound and heartbroken。 As an American we understand a very sanitized version of World War II and really understand it mostly from a solider's perspective。 Reading Hannah's book and gaining a better insight of the plight of the women and children left behind and their perseverance was gut wrenching and awe inspiring。 I cried through many of the last chapters but beamed with pride for the perseverance of those at home and the lengths some people went through to save others from persecution。 。。。more
